Ganes Academy teaches Further Mathematics in North London at two levels. A-Level Further Maths follows the Edexcel specification (9FM0), covering Core Pure 1 and 2 plus the further mechanics and further statistics options: complex numbers, matrices, further calculus, differential equations, polar coordinates and hyperbolic functions. Who Further Maths Is For
Further Maths is taken by students who already find A-Level Maths comfortable and want more of it. It is not a repeat of the same content at a higher difficulty: it is a second, parallel A-Level that roughly doubles the pure mathematics, then adds a choice of applied options. Complex numbers, matrices, further calculus, differential equations, polar coordinates and hyperbolic functions are all new material, and most of it is the mathematics a student meets again in the first year of a maths, physics or engineering degree.
Universities value it for exactly that reason. A handful of mathematics departments require it, many more list it as preferred for maths, engineering, physics and computer science, and admissions tests such as STEP, MAT and TMUA sit far more comfortably with a student who has covered the Further Maths pure content. Entry requirements change year to year, so check the specific course, but the pattern is consistent: it is treated as a signal of depth rather than of extra volume.
It is also the hardest subject on this list to find a local tutor for. Plenty of tutors offer A-Level Maths; far fewer are willing to sit down with a student and work through Core Pure 2 or a further mechanics option. It is demanding, so it works best for students who are already comfortable with A-Level Maths and want the extra depth.
Do I need Further Maths for a maths or engineering degree?

Very few engineering courses require it outright. Which exam board do you teach for Further Maths?
